Cyril was a learned archbishop and a prolific writer. In the early years of his active life in the Church, he wrote various exegesis, among them a “Commentary on the Old Testament”, a “Thesaurus”, a “Discourse against Arians”, a “Commentary on the Gospel of John”and the “Dialogues on the Trinity”. Although he is remembered today for his role in the Council of Ephesus and the tumultuous events of its patriarchy, it is fair to believe that Cyril imagined that his biblical commentaries would be his most important legacy. In 429 Christological controversies increased his literary output to the point where his opponents could not keep up. His writings often allude to the doctrines of the other Fathers of the Church.

Cirilo foi um arcebispo erudito e um escritor prolífico. Nos primeiros anos da sua vida ativa na Igreja, escreveu exegeses diversas, entre elas um “Comentários sobre o Antigo Testamento”, um “Thesaurus”, um “Discurso contra Arianos”, um “Comentário sobre o Evangelho de João” e os “Diálogos sobre a Trindade”. Embora seja hoje lembrado pelo seu papel no Concílio de Éfeso e pelos eventos tumultuosos de seu patriarcado, é lícito crer que Cirilo imaginava que seus comentários bíblicos seriam seu legado mais relevante. Em 429 as controvérsias cristológicas aumentaram sua produção literária a ponto de seus adversários não conseguirem acompanhar. Seus escritos fazem frequentemente alusão às doutrinas dos demais Padres da Igreja.
